Obsidian 3D Printer: High Quality, Sleek, and Affordable
For the 2nd year in a row, Kodama is raising the standard for 3D printers. Obsidian is plug & print and has it all.
About this project
Following Kodama's success last year delivering the Trinus 3D printer to all backers, we're ready to once again raise the bar in 3D printing while lowering the price.
Introducing Obsidian, a never-before-seen combination of reliability, quality, and aesthetics. If that's not enough: It runs on non-proprietary firmware, too.
“We felt there was too much of a gap between cheap, unsightly printers that are complicated to assemble and use, and overpriced 3D printers. We knew there had to be a better way to make 3D printing accessible to everyone. We want everyone in the world with an idea in their head to be able to hold it in their hand..”
Obsidian has been in development since 2015, and is Kodama’s first in-house self designed 3D printer, in collaboration with an all-star team of various industry experts. Kodama founder and CEO Michael Husmann is a former project manager at Apple.
The mechanics and internals were handled by an ex Bosch engineer with 3D printing experience. Quality control and electronics were done in consultation with a Singapore based electrical engineer with 30 years experience. Obsidian‘s UI/UX designer works for a major automobile manufacturer. Assembly line bids are in discussion with Flextronics (who assembled the original Trinus) and Foxconn.
AS FEATURED IN
At Kodama’s research and development lab we’ve produced not one, not two, but several working prototypes and have sent them to reviewers around the world, including big names like Make Anything, Maker’s Muse, 3D Maker Noob and 3D Printing Nerd. Here’s what our prototype testers have to say. Keep checking back for new videos as prototype evaluations are ongoing.
PLUG & PRINT
Forget "minutes to assemble." Unlike most budget and affordable 3D printer kits, Obsidian comes ready out of the box. Just load your filament, plug the power in, and you’re good to go.
POWER OUTAGE RECOVERY
For most 3D printers, a power outage or accidental disconnect is fatal and frustrating, especially when you're halfway into a 12 hour print. With Obsidian, just reconnect and tap 'resume.' *This feature is controlled by the LCD board and therefore limited to Obsidian Plus and Deluxe.
With Obsidian you’re not limited to PLA.
Upgrade your package to include a heated bed for printing with Nylon, ABS, PETG, and more! We’ve even successfully printed with PC (Polycarbonate) and CF (Carbon Fiber). But there's one more you may not have heard of, our exclusive and world's first filament with Obsidian powder. In addition, we're in talks with a factory in Germany to produce tungsten nozzles as a future add on.
Obsidian looks cool and has nice features, but can it print? Absolutely. We know that at the end of the day, the benchmark that matters most is print quality, and Obsidian delivers! See for yourself below or check out our showcase here!

WHO IS KODAMA, INC. ?
Kodama is a San Francisco based company with team members coming from Apple, Bosch and Porsche; experienced engineers and consumer experience professionals. For the past year the team was hands on to develop Obsidian and its add-ons in our Shanghai research and development office. Year-round we have Kodama personnel in China, we are not just handing a manufacturing contract over to a supplier and waiting for the best.
In order to deliver our 2016 project Trinus to 3300+ backers in 80+ countries and successfully transition it from crowdfunding to e-commerce, we partnered with warehouses in New Jersey, Rotterdam, Sydney, and Shenzhen. This distribution set up continues to provide Trinus 3D printers and accessories that you can purchase right now at Kodama3d.com. We will continue to refine and expand our distribution network (including a US west coast warehouse) in order to ensure the timely delivery of Obsidian.
